How Interwrite PRS (infrared clickers) works

How Interwrite PRS (infrared clickers) works How PRS WOrksIn a nutshell, each member of the class responds privately to a question or prompt, the responses are collected, and the summarized results are displayed as a histogram for all to see.The durable, compact clicker is pocket-sized, just 4" x 2" x 3/4", and simple to use. No special training is required.
Student Response Student Response ChartStudents respond to questions, either multiple-choice or numeric, by pressing the buttons on their PRS wireless clicker. The signals sent are intercepted by the PRS receiver, which in turn is connected to a computer, either PC or Mac. Every time a signal from a transmitter is received, one of the boxes shown in the response chart changes color.

Since each clicker is encoded with a unique sender ID number, the box in the response chart shows information that identifies the sender. The instructor has the flexibility to display only the information (student first name, last name, nickname, student ID number, or transmitter ID number) they choose. The response itself is not displayed. At the end of the question period, a statistical summary of the responses received can be shown as a histogram, either automatically or with a keystroke. There is also the option of attaching a confidence level—high, medium or low—to the response sent.
Creating Questions

Creating Questions ChartInterwrite Response provides the flexibility to author questions in several different formats:

Creating Questions within Interwrite Response:

Interwrite Response software provides a very simple and intuitive interface to create questions within the software. The software allows you to select the number of answers, identify the correct answer, and set the time limit for students to answer the question. In addition to typing in questions, you can also import industry standard XML format questions and their corresponding correct answer from various sources, including many book publishers.

Creating Questions with Power PointCreating Questions using PowerPoint:

Interwrite Response software also includes a PowerPoint add-in that allows you to turn any PowerPoint slide into a question slide.
Operating Modes There are two modes of operation for Response that the operator (instructor) can select prior to the start of each session:

In Anonymous Mode, no record is kept on the individual responses.

In Known Mode, each ID-tagged response is recorded in a data file in the sequence received. The cycle is repeated for each question until the end of the session. At that time, the individual student responses can be marked (graded). The results can be saved into the Response Gradebook or imported into Excel or other popular 3rd-party grade book applications.
Simplicity and Ease of Use Simple to UseThe simplicity of the Interwrite Response software makes it easy to set up and easy to use. The response grid, shown in the Session Window, can be changed to fit your class size and will respond with the numeric transmitter code, student ID, student first name or last name.

Hardware Features

Feature Description Benefit
Unique Transmitter ID Each transmitter has a unique ID that can be assigned to individual students. Each student’s response can be tied directly to him or her.
Low Cost and No Recurring Fees Transmitters are owned by the student or purchasing institution. There are no online or registration fees assessed to activate the transmitter. Saves significant money over multiple semesters and for students using the clicker in multiple classes.
Alpha-numeric Keypad Transmitters have alphanumeric values (i.e. 1A, 2B, 3C, 4D, 5E, 6F, 7G, 8H, 9I, 0J) Teachers can ask multiple-choice questions that have up to 10 options and numeric valued questions.
High & Low Confidence Levels Two programmable keys allow students to indicate high and low confidence levels with their responses. Teachers can not only gauge if the students' answers are correct or incorrect, but how confident they were in answering the question.
Infrared Technology Receivers use infrared technology similar to a TV remote. The clickers operate at a range of up to 60 feet from the receivers. Very reliable technology that operates on a “line of sight”, so it will not interfere with radio frequency equipment or other systems in adjacent rooms.
Wireless Option for Receivers Wireless transceivers allow the connection of the computer and one or more groups of receivers to be accomplished without cables. In larger classrooms, wireless transceivers are useful to eliminate floor wiring. The wireless system may also be a cost savings for institutions requiring contractors to perform extensive hard-wiring configurations.
Compatible with Standard Computer Hardware Receivers are connected to the computer’s comm port (or a USB converted port). Easy to install.

Software Features

Feature Description Benefit
Windows, Mac and Linux compatible Minimum requirements: MicroSoft Windows 2000 or XPMac OS X 10.3.9 or greater Greater flexibility because it is not limited to a single operating system.
Question Authoring Tool Teachers can enter questions easily into the Interwrite Response software and set up time limits, number of choices, select the correct answer, number of chances, and other options. Teachers have the flexibility to create questions in the Response system and/or utilize their PowerPoint presentation slides.
PowerPoint™ Integration A PowerPoint Add-In toolbar allows educators the ability to quickly and easily turn any PowerPoint slide into a Response question slide. Teachers have the flexibility to create questions in the Response system and/or utilize their PowerPoint presentation slides.
PRS Response Graph At the completion of a question, the PRS Response Graph displays a histogram that tallies the results of student responses. Teachers can instantly see if their students are grasping key concepts and adjust their lesson accordingly.
PRS Response Map Instructors can see when students enter their response by viewing the response map. The response map can be set up based on an instructor’s class roster, randomly or sequentially. For larger classes, response maps can be set on a timed cycle displaying responses in smaller sections.
Instant Grading Students’ responses can be instantly graded and recorded in PRS’ integrated Gradebook. Data can also be uploaded to other grade book systems such as Blackboard Learning System™, Web Assign® and WebCT™. Eliminates hours spent on hand grading and recording of students’ responses.
Variety of Reporting Options Multiple reports available such as attendance, session results by student, session summary results by question and cumulative grades by student. Provides educators greater flexibility and power to leverage student assessment data collected through Response.
Question Weighting Educators can place a different value on select questions in a lesson. A more accurate grade is recorded based on the difficulty of the question.
“On-The-Fly” Questions Questions may be created “on-the-fly” during a class session by using the Add Question function in the Interwrite Response software. Allows educators even greater flexibility during class by assessing students’ retention of the subject matter and inserting questions as needed, to reinforce certain topics.
Import Questions from Textbook Publishers and Other Sources Many book publishers include a set of XML-based questions available with their text. An XML question import capability is included in the Interwrite Response software which allows prepared questions, responses and correct answers to be imported. Saves time and effort creating questions. Questions from publishers validated from textbook Test Item File.
Free Web Registration Tool A free Web registration applet is available. Students can log into this Web application, hosted by the institution, to register for their transmitters for their class. For larger classes, eliminates the need for instructors to enter each student’s information and transmitter ID.
Data easily managed in other programs Data is saved in ASCII Comma Delimited Format (.csv). Data can be easily read as an Excel™ data file or imported into other grade book programs such as Blackboard Learning System, Web Assign and WebCT.
Software Site Licensed When Interwrite PRS is purchased, the software is site licensed to the institution purchasing it. This allows any number of copies to be made for computers owned by the institution or used for teaching at the institution. Also, free upgrades are available for one year at the tech support site.
